Murray Charters began playing cello in Grade 9 in Toronto. Principal cello teachers include Marcus Adeney (from Paris, Ontario), Lazlo Varga, Malcolm Tait and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. He studied viola da gamba with Peggie Sampson and Desmond du Pré. He was a founding member of the Hart House Consort of Viols (Toronto) for 2 years and principal cello of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra for 15 years. He also played in the Hamilton Philharmonic and Symphony London (Ontario) for 2 years. Notable chamber groups include the Terra Nova Chamber Players, Brant Chamber Players, Tirata, Strawberry Jam, Abingdon Trio and Grand River Trio. He was conductor of the Brant Chamber Players and the Brantford Youth Symphony Orchestra and has recorded with Buddy Wasisname & The Other Fellas. Currently he also plays with the Stratford Symphony and chamber groups in the Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph regions.
